Abdominal Therapy
The abdomen is the center of the body in more ways than one. It houses digestion, reproduction, and some of the most important organs we carry. When it is well, we tend to feel well. When it is not, everything is affected.
An ancient healing tradition
This work is not a modern invention. It is rooted in the traditional healing practices of the Masewal Maya of Belize and the Yucatan, passed down through generations of healers whose understanding of the human body was profound, precise, and deeply respectful of the connection between the physical and the spiritual.
The lineage traces directly to Don Elijio Panti, a Masewal Maya H'Men born in 1893 in Peten, Guatemala, who spent decades healing people from his community and eventually the wider world. He gave the gift of his knowledge generously, and it has touched thousands of lives globally. It is important to honor that gift and the indigenous roots from which it grew.
This work was formerly taught and shared under the name Arvigo Maya Abdominal Therapy through the Arvigo Institute, named after Dr. Rosita Arvigo, who studied directly under Don Elijio Panti. It is now carried forward by Tul'ix Indigenous Arts, an evolution of the Arvigo Institute that centers compassionate decolonization and honors the indigenous roots of this tradition with intention and care.
Learn more about Tul'ix Indigenous ArtsWhat Abdominal Therapy is
At its core, this is a gentle, external abdominal bodywork technique that works to guide the organs of the digestive and reproductive systems back into their optimal position, restoring proper circulation, nerve function, and lymphatic flow to the abdomen and pelvis.
The abdomen is uniquely vulnerable to displacement and restriction. Surgeries, injuries, pregnancies, emotional stress, and years of postural habits can all shift the position of organs and create tension in the surrounding tissues. This tension does not always announce itself where it originates. Digestive issues, menstrual pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, and lower back pain can all trace their roots to what is happening in the belly.
Restoring alignment
Gentle, precise external hands-on work encourages displaced or restricted organs to return to their natural position. When organs sit where they are designed to sit, the structures around them can relax, circulation improves, and function is restored throughout the surrounding system.
Improving circulation and lymphatic flow
Tension and misalignment in the abdomen can restrict both blood and lymphatic flow to the reproductive and digestive organs. Abdominal Therapy works to release these restrictions, allowing fresh circulation to reach tissues that have been starved of it, and supporting the body's natural clearing processes.
Post-surgical support
After a C-section or major abdominal surgery, the surrounding tissues need time and support to recover. Abdominal Therapy helps by improving circulation to the scar site, supporting the nervous system's response around the area, and creating a better healing environment for the tissues involved. It works with what the body is already trying to do.
Nervous system support
The abdomen is rich with nerve tissue, including the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in the body's stress response and overall regulation. Abdominal Therapy has a calming, grounding effect on the nervous system that extends well beyond the session itself.
Who it helps
Abdominal Therapy is one of the most powerful tools I offer for women's health and post abdominal surgery recovery. The conditions it supports are wide-ranging, because the abdomen touches everything.
